Here's the plot, as of thus. Tell me what you guys think.
The great and powerful ruler of Omnom, Aralda, has ruled the land for many years. His reign was a fruitful one, for the many lands under his rule- Braza, Halc, Zin, and Punattar- enjoyed peace and feast alike. Aralda had many friends, but only two close friends: Vilorgard and Troril. Both men were powerful fighters and mages; Vilorgard, however, was best at practical thinking. Troril excelled at abstract thought. They helped each other, and the king, through many years. It is the 1094th Year of the Light, as it is called by the people. Before this, there were the Years of Darkness. It was a time of conquest, bloodlust, and back-stabbery. The kings in that age were ruthless warlords that killed their own men if they even spoke of rebellion. The people lived in poverty and famine- not to mention fear. Soldiers would burst in to a home without any warning, demand lodging, and do as they pleased; after all, it was the king’s orders.
The Darkness lasted for two hundred years. It came to an end, in the times of lore, when the God-King Antian came to power. His rule was the first peace the citizens had enjoyed in such a long time, but they knew not why. They cared not- for a burden was gone! It was time to rejoice! And why not? However, it was unknown to the people that Antian had not signed a treaty, or killed a dictator. He had destroyed the royal Throne of Farvedon. Farvedon was a mighty sorcerer in the Years of the Trees, named so because not even the trees can remember them. He constructed the throne out of the finest Balewood and Sun-Crystal he could acquire. It was a glorious construct, and he gave it as a gift to the king of that time- no one knows who.
The court mage had warned against such a thing. Because it was made by sorcerer, and sorcerers are highly unstable wizards, the chair may be enchanted. The king was overcome by its glory, as mortal men are, and disregarded his trusted mage’s advice. He had it set in gold and secured to the king’s chamber floor by the strongest bonding magics available. Day by day, the king grew fiercer and angrier at even his own family. It is widely accepted that the day Farvedon donated the chair to the king, the entire region of Erilor began is slow and steady descent into the Darkness.
When Antian destroyed the chair, he had it burnt. Or, at least, it was set ablaze. The fragments did nothing, even when engulfed in flame. The magic guarding it was too powerful to penetrate- even for all consuming fire. The court mage, a descendant from the very mage who advised against the chair, immediately ordered it locked in the Sea Chamber. The Sea Chamber was a large cavern located on an island, in the middle of the Guirath Sea. The chamber is guarded by a huge Indimân Dragon. The Indimân Dragon was a giant blue behemoth, more of a sea serpent, if you will. It was said the dragon could wrap around a city and still have neck enough to reach the center. Others said it was known to fool ships into thinking they saw land with its tail, and then eating them whole. However, all agreed: it was a fearsome beast.
The fragments of the Chair of Farvedon still emanate power. Theirs is an evil power; although harnessed by a powerful mage or warrior, it could be utilized to do anything its bearer wished. This is the problem the people have had for many years. They would send their most powerful champion, or their best-witted thief, or even a strong-minded wizard to attempt to get the fragments. All have failed; dwarf, reptissa, human, and machina alike. If one trap did not claim their life, another did. Should one survive the traps, the monsters would descend like flies on a carcass- and, very swiftly, that’s all they were.
Not all know of the tales. Some believe them to be nothing but folklore, others for them to be warnings to the young to behave. However, this is just what caused them to rebel. A small band of children, the self proclaimed Nettles of Phazar, set out to secure their own fragment. In a miraculous show of fate, they made it all the way past the traps and beasts with their diminutive size and cunning. They were the second set of people ever to set foot in the Sea Chamber. Admittedly, it was a soaking wet foot, but a foot none the less. They snatched their fragment and escaped, leaving little trace- even though no one has seen the chamber since.
The children unwittingly catapulted themselves into fame, being adored by everyone in their small hometown of Ora. Their fame spread to the entire region of Erilor, and the king requested audience with the youths. He congratulated them, rewarded them, and even knighted them. For what a task those children accomplished! Capturing the fragment! When the young heroes returned home, they dominated the local gangs. Their names alone were said in a revered whisper, and they even had a shrine erected in their honor.
In this year, though, the Nettles of Phazar are no longer a band of kids. They are a much larger organization, with their headquarters in the capitol city of Halc, Lirini City. They have large numbers, as almost any young squire or man with a sword who has any notion that they can use a weapon to some degree wants to join such a prestigious group. The fragment is still a large part of the gang; the orginal four members still control the group. Palacheu, Angore, Aunduit, and Ninolan are their names, and cannot go out in public (save at night, their preferred time) without having the populace kneel before them with gifts and blessings.
Palacheu cannot resist mingling with the people; he’s the most public of the group. He has a habit of aiding beginning raid parties and monster hunting groups. Angore keeps track of the organization’s Library, a grand building in the very heart of Lirini City. A common saying among the folk of Erilor: “Are you trying to read the Library of the Nettles?” meaning, are you crazy? This only hints at the pure enormousness of the annals, its sheer volume. Aunduit never much cared for the humans. He tends to all the beasts in the gang’s massive stable, where large Jerashi are stored. He trains others in the ways of beast husbandry, as well as monster identification. If someone is really nice to him, and earns his trust, he may show them something mind boggling… Ninolan is the only female in the group. Her practicality was what saved the group from financial ruin time and time again. It was even her idea to retrieve the shard, and giving credit where credit is due, she is the unspoken leader of the group.
